| Walter Shaw |
Walter Shaw enlisted in the U.S. Army at Jefferson Barracks on April 9, 1917, and was assigned to Company K, 18th Infantry Band. His collection includes a
variety of correspondence, photographs, citations, and ephemera related
to Shaw’s service and his mother’s Gold Star Pilgrimage. Shaw frequently wrote home about his experiences, both stateside and abroad. His letters offer an interesting insight into the life of a soldier through training and combat. Gassed at Cantigny while serving as a stretcher-bearer, Shaw returned to combat after a brief recovery. Days later, Shaw was killed in a night bombardment at Charpentry in the Argonne on October 2, 1918. For more information about Shaw and his experiences, refer to our blog post:
