The Estella Wilferth Papers from the State Historical Society of
Missouri contains correspondence from several soldiers describing their
experiences at training camps during World War I, along with their
affections for Estella Wilferth, a Boone County, Missouri resident.
Within the heartfelt letters, the soldiers discussed the difficulties of
training as well as their anxieties about going to war. Of particular
interest is a letter from Thomas J. Mahan, in which he discusses support
for the war in the Philippines where he was teaching in 1917. The
collection also includes a letter to Estella from her sister-in-law,
Meta, in which she describes volunteering for the Red Cross.
