Richard T. Smith joined Company “A” of the Signal Corps, Missouri National Guard in 1911 and saw service on the Mexican Border. In October 1917, Smith’s unit sailed for France and in March 1918, he received the Distinguished Service Cross for leading his men to safety under a barrage and returning under heavy fire to rescue an injured soldier. Smith was the first Missourian and first officer of the 42nd Division to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He later participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives and was in the Army of Occupation until April of 1919.
