George O. Vonland was born in 1898 and lived in St. Louis, Missouri, before being sent to fight in Europe during World War I. The collection consists of a journal written by Sgt. Vonland, Company H, 138th Infantry. In it, he described various battles that he fought in and his impressions of France. Vonland was involved in a battle at Hilsenfirst after which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre from the French government. Later, he was wounded at the Battle of the Argonne and as a result was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in action. After recovering from his wounds, Vonland was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. By the end of the War, he was the Commander of the 55th Company, 324th Motor Train.
