Thompson, Stephen Papers

Lieutenant Stephen W. Thompson

In his exciting letter, Missourian Lieutenant Stephen W. Thompson describes his role in an aerial bombing raid. Thompson, a West Plains native, was the first American to shoot down a German airplane during World War I. The letter, which is held by the State Historical Society of Missouri, also describes mail censorship, sightseeing in Paris, the Parisian street system and architecture, entertainment, and weather.
